Question to my 3 year associate attorneys: when did you know it was time to move on from your first job?

Finishing up third year right now and very much feeling like it’s time to move. But want my bonus.

When I felt like my growth as an attorney had stagnated and I was still doing mostly low level tasks. In hindsight I wish I hadn’t waited as long to leave.

like

Why do people at firms do this? Is it because they don’t believe in our growth as attorneys or they just know we’re fast at doing those tasks so we end up getting stuck with them?

I figured it out around month 6 or 7 when I was working 90 hours a week and hadn’t seen any friends for months all while getting chewed out on midnight calls

If you’re not hitting bonus, it’s probably time to leave

This has been my experience at every firm as a junior. I have no idea if I am bright or the average lawyer is extremely stupid.

When my workload significantly decreased after I reported that one of the partners sexually assaulted me twice.

So horrible. Sorry to hear this happened.

When it affected my mental health so badly that I could barely sleep and began withdrawing from things I love. I quit without anything lined up. I’m in-house now making more money. Best career decision I ever made was to trust my gut and bet on myself.

Not a third year, but I knew about a year in that the job I was at wasn’t for me. The grass is not always greener, but if there are several things you dislike, and you can find another role without those things, it’s probably not a bad idea to make a switch.

like

Chiming in from the other side: I didn’t move when the best pitch from a recruiter made me wonder if we were hiring for new positions. Everything else was easy to turn down because it was clearly a worse offer. Find a place you feel comfortable and stay as long as that persists.

Ewwwwwwwww. I am so sorry that happened to you.

When I decided to move into appellate lit. My firm did not excel in appellate lit so I knew I should move.

To be honest, in hindsight it was when I returned from my maternity leave. Partners I had worked with before didn’t want to staff me anymore and I had a hard time keeping my billables up. If I had cared about my career, I would have looked for another job. But I had a baby at home and basically “quiet quit” before it was a thing (this was 14 years ago) and rode out another 2 years of good pay and not working too many hours until I was told to find another a place. By then I was having a second kid and relocating anyway. But this probably doesn’t help you

Hi all
I started out as a graphic designer. Worked for about 4yrs in different roles. Then i started a digital design role for 2 yrs and then made my transition into ux. i have been in a ux role for 5 years. But i want to steer my career towards something more creative. Like in 5-10 years I wouldn’t want to be a specialist or a ux director. I d like to be an art director or creative director. I love branding & marketing but also product. Would love something that allows me to do both?

Additional Posts in Law

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.
