I agree with the sync/prep meeting. And in that meeting I would say it just like you said it to us….”I need you to x because y.” Most bosses will appreciate the direct language.

Ugh. I went through this earlier this year and it was painful. Be a good partner and suggest a 15-30 min sync to prepare for the meeting make it informational and address the key points to make sure he has visibility on the critical issues, understands what your role is, what the team contributes, and stakeholder communication. Make room/opportunity for questions and if he does not ask any or does not feel the need to meet, then trial by fire it is - at least your stepped up. FYI my new boss ignored my olive branch and made a complete fool of himself in front of cur partners.
