My rule has always been to network as much as possible—there’s never a wrong time to start. I recommend beginning early in your PhD, as those connections can be invaluable when you graduate.
I think people should be networking all the time. It's not necessarily about who you're working with, but building relationships and making connections all through your career typically pays dividends when you least expect it. I've gotten jobs from random classmates I had my freshman year just because I kept in contact with them.
Rising Star
I’m not sure there is an exact year but you need a strong network. Many positions in industry are essentially closed to PhDs which is the first hurdle. Most companies would rather have someone with general knowledge for a lower salary than a highly specialized person with higher expectations.
If you target the right groups and sectors you have a shot, but there’s a reason the majority of PhDs end up in academia
Could be true, but is also probably true for undergrad degrees too. Knowing people is never a bad thing
