I was recently let go as part of a “workforce reduction” of which there have been several over the past many months. They started doing these layoffs in micro doses where they would let go of a few people in each group rather than announce bulk layoffs. The truth is, RSM has spent too much money and resources on expanding their India and El Salvador practices in an effort to improve margins. It fails when the work quality is poor and more time and resources are spent trying to correct or clean up that product therefore decreasing already poor margins. RSM has also spent too much time and $ on external factors with little to no effort in protecting their current employees (partners and principals included). I get it, it is “just business”. At the same time, you don’t succeed when you treat your people like crap and drag them through the mud. Leadership is only focused on outsourcing and private equity. This isn’t new to CPA firms, but RSM doesn’t know how to succeed in this environment. Leadership are ignorant to where value should truly lie, and the rest are not equipped to weather the storm. This is leading to reductions in workforce, and people jumping ship to even lesser paying jobs because RSM has made the current climate unbearable. Good luck to those that willingly stay in the firm. May the odds be ever in your favor. Just please don’t bend the knee to a culture and leadership that readily holds blunt objects against your back, just waiting for the right moment to strike.

That thread is exaggerated but many truths within it. Firm top line is growing and some of the practice groups are killing it this year and some people did get mid year raises.
