This is a staff position?
They haven’t made an offer, you haven’t accepted. If they end up wanting to hire, you can definitely still negotiate. But your leverage depends on how much they want you vs other options on the table.
I would say - because it’s the beginning of the process and you have a lot to learn about the ask of the job always caveat with “what I know of the role right now that sounds reasonable but let’s keep talking”
You can try but, and I hope I’m wrong. You blinked first. So you might not have room to negotiate further. Still, you should try. Hope it works out for you.
Thank you
Ooof that is a tough one. I would say it never hurts to negotiate because the worst they can say is no, however, you did kind of let them know you would be fine with what they offered. I always try to negotiate though because I don't want to leave any money on the table.
"Around" is vague and can work in your favor. If it gets to an offer stage get the details for the full compensation package - benefits, vacation time, etc. Then go back to them based off of that to negotiate because that was information you didn't have when all you agreed to was that their original number wasn't a waste of your time.
But like other people said, and with any gig, your leverage is only as strong as their preference for you over the next best option.
