I once found out I was being paid substantially more than another associate for no apparent reason. I was already planning to leave the firm so I told her she was underpaid and what they had been paying me. She was able to use my departure to get a raise but ended up leaving shortly thereafter because she felt taken advantage of. If you’re in a situation where you’re the one being paid less than your peers you should start looking for other options. Your firm doesn’t value you or your work. If they did, they would be paying you fairly without you having to ask for it.
I went to accounting and asked for my production numbers, etc. so I could have a basis for the conversation. The partners came to me because accounting gave them the heads up and said “why are you asking,” and I said “because my feedback was all positive, and I needed to figure out why I was making less than my peer.” It lead to a very productive conversation. Communication is half the battle with this stuff.
I recently learned I was being paid more than some more senior attorneys at my firm (I’m a 2nd year). I think it also depends on your prior firm (I came from a bigger known firm so they knew my pay expectations were probably higher than most) and after their initial offer, I countered. They negotiated with me and met me at the number I was actually hoping for. I know the other associate who is paid less than me did not negotiate salary and also didn’t have other offers at time of interview (I had two other offers). So I think those factors come into play, too. Did you negotiate your initial offer or do they have more experience or come from a more prestigious firm? I know that seems silly, but sometimes those play a role in salary offers…

Yes. A colleague I’m friends with got an offer from another firm and used it to get a raise. So they were earning slightly more than me despite being more junior. I chalked it up to the game and moved on after being frustrated for a minute.
