A former coworker in crim defense had two phones, in case clients needed his number. I think Google Voice or similar is sufficient. Does your firm’s phone provider offer an app? Vonage Business does.
100% yes. Keep work and personal life separate.
Only drug dealers should carry two phones
Have you ever used Cellebrite and/or Relativity
The last time this came up around here, someone arguing in favor of separate phones pointed out that information stored on your phone could be subject to a discovery request if your firm gets sued (the implication being that if you use one phone, your personal information could, in theory, be disclosed).
Also an employment defense attorney. We’ve lost the argument every single time that employees’ phones are in their sole custody. They are always fair game (in my experience). I don’t think having two phones would help unless there are zero emails or discussion about work (coworkers, family, friends) that take place on the “personal” phone. Even then, given a sharp judge and an aggressive plaintiffs attorney, I think they would discoverable.
Separate = Personal space. Extra battery. Free international data.
I have two. Left over paranoia from working in public agencies where any work related items on your phone could be subject to a public records request.
Also helps for turning off work when I’m on vacation. (Obviously I still bring and check my work phone, but I can leave it in the hotel room for hours on end and just be on vacation)
no. twice as much work: charging, updating, keeping track of it, figuring out which phone is vibrating. blegh.
No. If I’m supposed to be available at all times anyway I’d rather not have to keep track of 2 phones.
One phone, two numbers.
I use a google number. App is called “google voice”
Not unless you have clients calling you and you want to/can separate yourself from that. If it’s partners, they’re going bother you whether it’s your personal or private phone.
Yes
Are there any real 9 to 5 legal jobs, and if so, what are those jobs?
Government is not necessarily 9 to 5.
2 phones. I’ve had to deal with too many clients (including lawyers) who are apoplectic about their “personal” phone being imaged when they get involved in litigation.
I work in investigations so I’ve seen the sausage getting made. Whenever the individual only uses one phone (and it’s a corporate phone so it’s the company’s property), when we image it and begin the search, invariably some deeply personal stuff comes up. I’ve come across sexting, softcore and hardcore porn more times than I can count. And loooots of personal conversations too, when they contain search terms. We do our best to not have to review (and waste time on) this stuff, but it’s impossible to filter our everything. So 2 phones is good practice unless you’re OK with a document review monkey reading your IM.
I switched to 2 phones and like it a lot more. Makes separating work and personal life easier.
Two.
Most people co-mingle business and personal life. If a person is disciplined to only use the work device or email for work purposes and only use the personal device to communicate on personal matters, it's great to do... But as I said - most people use the 1 device and via policy, BYOD & MDM technology today - it is simple to have one co-mingled device. Who owns the tel # is a different issue
