it’s a notoriously difficult market to break into if you’re not already in Austin/are best friends with someone, and some agencies are growing.
Pay is fine but also not fine. You’re not getting anywhere near NYC/LA salaries, and sometimes agencies like to low ball because they know everyone wants to move to Austin and they can get away with it.
Housing market is nearly impossible. Be prepared to over spend what you think overspending would be.
I actually have been helping my parents look for a house here. There was some nice stuff that was maybe slightly outdated here and there (like bathrooms were redone but kitchen was from the 90s) and they were under 1m. 🙃 Travis Country is a good, more suburban area to look in. Also off of Manchaca (Menchaca - long story but it has two names) south of 71 there are some rennovated 60s/70s ranch style homes that have been nicely updated in the $700s. But, yes, I would move here with the remote job in NYC and then look for a house.
