I would always take on an opportunity to move up. It’s a no brainer. A good manager should also support that

Just because the spot opened up doesn't mean that you are a shoe-in to get it. I personally would talked to my manager about it and get their thoughts about you applying for the role. A truly good manager will support you without the need to hide anything, and candor will probably leave the door open to work together again should life twist and turn in that direction.
If they happen to be unsupportive and otherwise can't provide assurance to continue to push for your promotion, then you know you are free to continue to look for your next move.
How different is the new team from the current team? Not sure if being “senior” comes with a pay raise, or just a title bump. Typically, being more senior means you’ve shown a more advanced level of thinking which warrants a higher pay, and I’d always recommend taking pay raises when they are available. It sounds like the promotion in March isn’t guaranteed, which means you might wait 8 months to end up in exactly the same position. Personally, I’d take the opportunity now over the potential opportunity in 8 months even if it means you lose some contextual knowledge. Part of being a “senior” means you need less time to ramp up on new situations. I’d say now is a perfect opportunity to see how true that holds!
Only you know the best thing to do here. If your current manager is good at promoting people in a good manager to work for, add stick around and get promoted in my current team.
I ever, not knowing the other manager, makes it hard to be sure what to do.
Always take the opportunity that’s available. Promotion isn’t guaranteed
I’d do it if I were you, as someone who transferred teams and got the promotion I was looking for.
What’s the other team like? Is the work equally fulfilling? Or are you really just after the $$$?
March is a short time away. Far shorter than the memory of the manager you abandoned while they were working to get you promoted. If you did this to me, I’d know you are selfish and have no loyalty and that stain would carry forever
Why would a manager have to fight to get you promoted? That's nonsense. If the manager wants you promoted on their team they will get you promoted. If there's nothing written on paper and signed stating that if you stay on that track you will get promoted in 6 months, then that promise is worthless. If you know of a supervisor role opening up, take that role. Don't wait on anyone else to be wishy washy stating that they promise this or that. Besides you attempting to take a supervisor role on another team and even if you fail to get it, then at bare minimum your current manager will realize you're serious. Take people to face value on what they say. 6 months? Right. The US is facing a secret recession and like anything will not be situation normal in 6 months from now.
