Since COVID, the courtroom dress code feels weird. I’ve seen someone in flip flops next to someone in a three-piece suit, and no one blinked. I still default to suits, but I’m starting to wonder if I’m overdressing or if I’ll get side-eyed for trying anything more relaxed. What’s your current court dress code? Have you figured out a look that feels polished but not exhausting?

A year ago I was drove to court, about 40 minutes from the office. Got out, went to grab my suit jacket from the backseat, it wasn’t there. I left it in my office. Still had shirt and tie on. It was dead of summer, didn’t think all that much of it. Sat down at the counsel table, judge walks in, we sit. First words out of his mouth after appearances were stated for the record was “counselor, where is your suit jacket.” Even after explaining he still gave me a hard time about it. So…wear a suit.

I wear a suit to court. I'd rather be overdressed than under dressed. Believe it or not judges do care. I had a coworker wear a suit jacket, matching pants and a button up shirt to court once. He'd forgotten the tie. The judge pulled him into chambers and dressed him down.

Nice bowl to avoid lowering the average in the US-centric threads. Anybody else finding that with the lack of pay rises this year, it’s become even harder to benchmark? Had a few recruiters recently suggesting I’d get 25% more by moving to a competitor but no telling whether that’s a short term-gain for a longer term hit.

Home office preference question. I am getting ready to redo the layout of my home office. One option I'm considering would have my desk facing a wall. I am wondering if anyone with this current setup has any feedback about it. I would face the wall so that I would have a better background for video conferences (am on about half the day) and also my cord situation would be cleaner.

I’m maxing out my 401K, traditional IRA and HSA this year and paying for some house improvements. I have about $750K total investments and very close to $2M net worth, but realize that I am behind on investments if I want to do FIRE. I was focused on paying off huge chunks of my mortgage and managed to whittle it down to $75K left. Would you suggest I go ahead and pay that off this year? Or pause and do a mega back door roth instead? I’m mid 40s. Thanks!

I have a governmental entity client in Texas that wants to offer 6 weeks of paid parental leave for all employees, even those who aren’t eligible for FMLA. After the paid 6 weeks, the employee can choose to continue paid leave using any accrued personal leave.

Texas does not have a paid parental leave statute.

If paid leave above what is required is offered for parents, do we also have to provide the same benefit to other employees that are eligible for unpaid leave?

Hello, I’m an associate (almost at the one year mark) at a midsize firm on the EPL team. I did about 2 years of employment law as a clerk during school and know that’s what I want to go into. I’ve asked for more EPL work but keep catching PI cases. I second-chaired an employment trial but don’t see any EPL work for the foreseeable future and wasn’t getting as much EPL exposure as I wanted before the trial. Any advice on a lateral move to a bigger firm with a broader range of EPL work?

Recently received an offer from Ogletree to do only class action work. It'll be a big change for me, I'll be starting as a fourth year. Double my current salary, etc.

What will this be like? It's more of a niche, but lucrative, part of their practice, right? Will I really get good WLB like they claim? I have a nice 40 hour a week job right now, no billables.
