I want to become a more competitive applicant but not sure where to start. Are there any certificates, skills, or knowledge that I should be learning in my free time?

I love all dogs! But I love my mutt the most!
Big!
Bigger
I, too, actually have both...the Rottie and her brother the Beagle. He is 15 now and has lost pretty much all of his hearing so doesn’t bark and howl anymore. Love him tons as well!
So sorry for your loss....she was a real cutie!
Love and prefer bigger dogs. But one thing to think about in terms of size is practicality. If you're the type to take your dog everywhere, then a small dog is infinitely easier to take along with you. On subways, in stores, planes, hotels, apartments. With a small dog, lots of places will allow a pet if it's in a carrier and within certain size limits. Generally speaking, you have more options. If you don't mind leaving a big dog at home when you need to, and plan to travel more locally/within driving distance, then size is less of an issue. Also not saying travel is impossible with a big dog. You'll just need to figure out where you can go and how you'll get there, and you may have fewer options. Worth it though!
Agreed. Had this guy eyeballing me on a flight earlier in the year. My 85lb lab wouldn’t have been nearly as content riding in a handbag on a plane. . Lol
it’s a reflection of the breed, not the size of the dogs. Lots of small dogs have normal barks. I have 2 beagle/terrier mixes at 12 and 22 lbs. The former didn’t bark much at all and the latter has a normal bark.
I love small dogs - poms are too neurotic for me.
100% agree. Also, variation based on the individual. When I was growing up, my family adopted a mini dachshund. That little guy had a bigger, fuller bark than some 50+ pound dogs I’ve met.
Dogs with pride
I’ve had big dogs (60 -90lbs) all my life and don’t think I could have a small dog. Not that I don’t like them, just not my preference. There’s something about a big floppy goofy dog that you just can’t get with a small dog. 😊
I have had two small dogs. Neither one barked.
Both rescues, my first was a chihuahua/terrier mix (I think rat terrier from the looks of him) and currently I have a chihuahua. Typically people think of small dogs as yappers but I guess I lucked out!
There is no bad or wrong dog. It's all about what you want, can handle, are willing to train/work with, etc.
Want a couch potato? There are giant dogs who do nothing but sleep, eat and poop. And then there are smaller dogs too that want nothing more than to nap all day er day.
Really just ask yourself what breed matches your life and go from there.

Depends on preference 100%. My poodle/cocker mut is awesome but i do not like several small breeds just based on their behaviors and how they need to be.
