We recently hired a Black guy to join our team. He asked for $80K. He was given $80K. Fine. We had two open reqs and this White dude we were offering asked for $75K. When my boss called him to make a verbal offer, he told him our offer would be $75K. I thought the offer was fair given that person’s experience and expected impact in the role. When my boss sent the offer letter, he decided to bump it up to $80K to be more “equitable” to what the other guy (Black) got. No need to negotiate or nothing. Just an extra $5K for being White. Surely there is no way that a White person should make less than a Black person (even though that Black person is anticipated to provide greater incremental value based on their experience). Then the White dude started White duding. He asked for relocation assistance to be in a timezone closer to the team (it’s a remote job). Long story short, the dude declined the offer. I was just cackling because that was what they (boss) gets for being reckless in the name of “equity.” Normally I would speak out on this stuff, but I’m on my way out the door so ✌🏽

Does anybody have a view on the growth path / trajectory for a Strategy and Ops Lead at Google? I didn't get a very clear sense in my interviews, esp. because it feels like there is 1 manager for the team and so there is not a lot of scope for organic upward movement. Is it only through lateral moves within the org? You get enough tenure for the next role then find an opp to switch?

Any Jr ADs down to work on a side project?I’m a Jr CW looking to better fill out my book. Been freelancing all year, at some great shops, but haven’t come into too many bookworthy projects, so I’m staying proactive in the mean time. Want to break into FT, even mid level if I can and trying to get a better book together to do so. If you’re interested (maybe even in the same boat), please DM me and we can exchange info.

Thoughts on finding an easy-part time remote job (May or may not be relevant to my career) for a year and living abroad? How hard would it be to come back and pickup on your career?

Has anyone else found HR timelines to be a crawl during all of this year? Top 5 bank or smaller bank, it’s totally glacial pace, it doesn’t matter. I try to normally be engaged and quick with stuff client side or internal stuff but it truly blows my mind how slow HR is on things. Like if I was to be this slow client side, I’d be fired. Does anyone have similar experiences over the past year?

Do big 4 firms care about where you work? Say you want to work remotely in a different city, is there tax implications (they make you report your physical work location)

I love advertising, but only when I started doing it myself and not having to report to anyone but the client.
