I moved, so I no longer see “my kids” in the flesh, but I do “see” some of them online. They are military, parents, business owners, EDUCATORS (🤣), thespians, social workers, …. I am proud of them and their accomplishments because they ALL had to pull themselves up by hard work, determination, and VISION. Some of them took other paths, darker paths; those hurt me to the core but did not diminish my care for them.
Now just last fall I was at the mall picking up a package. The young lady waiting on me asked, “Did you used to teach at…?” And after we talked she told me to please go to another store because another of my former students worked there. I did. I will say I DO have hope that many of my former students will succeed despite the world around them being flawed because they were not born to privilege or wealth; they are used to scrapping for everything they get. “LIFE is not fair, but in this class everyone has the same OPPORTUNITY for success.” I hope they carry this with them.
Rising Star
This is the reward for all the days and hours. I loving seeing "my Kids" online and in person. One of my kids told his girlfriend he wouldn't marry her unless I approved. 😃
I love it when a former student recognizes me first and says, “Hey, you were my teacher!” It’s the best feeling knowing they remember, and even better when they share their successes. And yes, all of them will always be "my kids." ☺️
It’s kind of a nice step back when you do see a former student ‘out in the wild’. Reminds me of the bigger picture, get so used to the day to day, there’s going to come a time for that kid when they are on a completely different path. End of the school year though, I always start feeling so sentimental!!
