The draconian setup existed in 2019 and decades before that. Covid made these companies to have everyone work remote. We have stopped doing a lot of things that were done during COVID. Home Depot NEVER had remote culture before COVID.
I’m not saying RTO is great . Just saying we should not get carried away and start calling it “draconian”. These companies made deals with local governments to setup shop with the idea that it will support local economies along with tax benefits. It’s good to debate flexibility at work and ask for it, but you will lose your audience if you start with exaggerated terminology.
Before Home Depot had flexible/WFH Fridays. I have never worked in office on Fridays since I graduated from college in 2011. It is shocking to me that so many companies are forcing 5 days in office vs where we were 15 years ago.
It’s nuts honestly
It's crazy. These companies like Home Depot, Cox and Delta whatnot they pride themselves on being all these family friendly and people oriented companies unlike a Goldman Sachs or JPMorgan in NY and then to see this nonsense is ridiculous. Many of these Atl based companies are low margin goods businesses that can't pay bonuses or equity like tech or finance. So, as it is, there is an element of being underpaid relative to the rest of big metros elsewhere.
