Honestly amazed by how it went through without a single person flagging hey maybe we shouldn’t do this with just one white girl in this specific political climate. If they had featured like 3 different baddies with distinct looks, then the good genes/jeans messaging would have ate and not been perceived as a dog whistle. It’s giving Kendall Jenner Pepsi ooof.
Agree with AD 1
You can’t call something that’s received more negative attention than positive attention a good ad.
Vibes, apparently.
On the 'good ad to missed the mark' spectrum, it's somewhere in the middle.
If it had dropped in a less politically volatile climate, it would have been forgotten by now.
Boring creative for a boring brand. But people are waaaay too worked up about it and I don’t think it’s as controversial as people think it is.
It’s just a basic b*** ad.
Oooooh got it. Thanks for telling me why I feel that way.
Given the political climate in the US, as in, rife with racism, maybe they don’t really care that they’re putting forward this message. Sadly, the ad feels pretty spot on for America to me. The reds love it.
Rising Star
It’s got us all talking about a brand I haven’t heard from since the early 2000’s.
If any of you ever made an ad that caused a stock to pop by 10% you’d be ecstatic about it. It’s down a few points from that, but it created $200M in marcap growth (in the short term). You can hate the ad and still realize that the business result is astonishing.
People are free to get offended by whatever they like. It was a harmless ad, and the fact that it was a blond woman (who is very popular right now) doesn’t make it racist. Additionally, I’d just reiterate that it’s been more effective than basically anything this year. If a plurality of black people found it offensive that wouldn’t be the case.
