Probably depends on how the in house legal team is structured. My team handles all of the company’s litigation (with outside counsel), pre-litigation, and administrative charges; supports or leads on compliance projects; and provides advice and counsel to HR and other business partners. In other in house legal teams, this work may be more siloed, so your routine may be more predictable. Most of my day is spent in calls/meetings or responding to emails to provide advice to my clients. My company is headquartered in California, but we operate nationwide with over 40k employees, so we stay busy. When my cases pick up, my focus will shift to those deadlines, whether it’s coordinating discovery responses, witness prep, etc. if there is a big compliance deadline, will pivot towards that. Honestly day-to-day varies depending on what fire needs to be prioritized. But the variety of work keeps it fun.
Usually M-F, 9-6, with flexibility to come in later/leave earlier, so long as you’re available in case of emergency. During the height of COVID, I was pulling crazier hours regularly - 7am-10pm or later was the daily norm with work on weekends, but not sustainable - my team was burnt out. We’ve stabilized this year and hours are more normal. Typically don’t work past 6 or on weekends unless there is a major deadline or emergency to deal with, and that doesn’t happen that often.
