So what’s the deal with OT for juniors in NYC? Did they raise the threshold again? I know only the big holding companies do it

It’s not voluntarily done by the agencies. When I was a junior I never got overtime. Nobody did. It has nothing to do with juniors, it just happens to affect mostly juniors. It’s a new labor law, signed by Obama in mid-2016 and took effect in December 2016 just before Trump started. The new law made it mandatory that anyone that made $47K or under must receive overtime pay, including salaried workers. Before that law was signed, the threshold was $23K which was so low, nobody on salary got overtime. Wish I had that law back when I was a junior pulling 80-90 hour weeks. Glad they finally did the right thing and made it a law. It should be higher than $47K to be honest. If an agency is not paying out overtime for someone making under $47K, it’s illegal and they should be reported.

Yep you are right. The new thresholds are different per county, looks wildly different all over the state. The $58K threshold in the 5 boroughs will kick in this year. The threshold changes depending on the business size. https://www.bizjournals.com/newyork/news/2019/04/09/what-the-dol-s-proposed-new-salary-thresholds-mean.html

It varies company to company. I’m under IPG and they do it based on title - in creative, it’s only Juniors, regardless of salary.

Yup! Regardless of base the junior title still qualifies.

Me and my wife moved to US in the last few years and recently had a baby. Both of us work in relatively stressful jobs. I am having conflicts with her on how to raise kids - my wife and mil don’t see daycare or nanny as viable options, and want to rely on grandparents from both sides to help with the same. They haven’t seen too many cases of children going to daycare in India in their family. Who else has faced this issue, and any thoughts on resolving the same? This is causing a strain b/w us.

I think (fingers crossed) that I am about to get a job offer for a management role. It would be a 45 percent pay increase and I honestly might be able to negotiate it to up to 55, but I just don’t feel excited about it. It’s a smaller company then where I am now, but still a decent size and great reputation, but the team is much smaller. I really want to be more excited because I know it’s a good opportunity. Any advice?

I have interviewed w/ every member of an early stage start up & have an offer to join as their 1st hire. I just don't trust their technical co-founder to be able to execute or attract the right talent, so I'm going to walk away from it. I trust the other co-founder though and want to be honest. Should I be blunt when saying why? Would anyone here have actually appreciated to hear this if you were in a leadership position at a start up, or is co-founder status too late to make a change anyway?

Maybe a strange take but I think that we should be more in touch with our internal bodies. We can send astronauts to the moon and rovers to mars but there’s no easy, portable way to scan our bodies to see what’s going on inside (e.g., a DIY full body xray or MRI). I think this could be the next gen of weighing scales that also show various health metrics, track fitness, etc. It could help with prevention and diagnosis. I guess it’s bad for health providers who make $ today from this. Thoughts?
