Some roles and employees thrive in ambiguity and then there’s others that require structure. I’ve learned the hard way that mismatch can make a job really awful. How do you assess a role’s ambiguity during interviews without sounding like you’re criticizing the employer?

I'd look for signs.

If the role is for someone who needs to be entrepreneurial, comfortable with ambiguity and operating in a changing environment, a self-starter, etc.

If the role is in a start-up vs a F100 corporation

If the interviewer says this is a new role and we want the hire to pave their own path.

Or they have no clear answer to what success looks like.

Obviously ambiguous roles can still be healthy. Roles with clear problems, sponsors, and definition of success.

If you want to ask you could say something like "I am comfortable with ambiguity but have learned there are different types. What parts of this role would you say are well-established vs figuring out as you go?"

Should I just quit the legal field?

I have been a paralegal or legal assistant since 2010. I have worked for small and large firms and a TPA. I've worked in L&E, PI, and ID. Billing hours gave me nightmares. Right now I'm in a hybrid paralegal/LA position where I'm responsible for all of the docketing and supporting the managing partner and 1 associate and their 90+ ID caseload. I make a lot of mistakes everywhere I work. I feel so incompetent. Should I just abandon this career path?

Hello, what is the going salary for a chief of staff in technology?

Should I leave my first permanent job as a team leader of 4 DPs in a FMCG business (only been there for 4 months) to join a huge Tech business for a 12months contract?

They offer me 60% more money than my permanent role. Circa 2000 dollars every month in my pocket

However, I am worried if I accept the tech role and I do not become permanent I will be looking again for a job in 12-24 months and my CV won't be showing a managerial position. Won't be showing any progress.

Career advice?

I'm a relatively junior data engineer (2yoe), the only other engineer (senior) that trained me left about a 6 months ago and I negotiated a nice raise for the extra responsibilities.

My performance reviews have been stellar, but my manager is starting to look to hire a senior to help me deliver projects as we do lack capacity right now.

I feel like I might be missing an opportunity to ask for a promotion and hire a junior instead.

Any opinions/tips?

As an junior UX designer, should I use the remaining months of this year to refine my portfolio as it seems there’s only rarely job postings for my level? I’ll apply when I feel it’s right regardless, but I’m wondering if more opportunities will come up late this year/early next year?
