If by research you mean actual legal research, probably once in a blue moon when a random issue of law pops up. If by research you mean due diligence then it will be a good chunk of your second year hours, though you should be able to pass off most of the primary diligence at some point this year so that you are mostly reviewing and drafting the memo.
Third year m&a associate. Don’t think I’ve done any research since I became an associate….
The only time I have actual legal research is once in a blue moon. And on those days I pray I’m swamped so I can say no.
Probably depends on the practice group. I’m in corporate and do some research, but have also had to do research for other groups because apparently they “don’t do” research
I'm a 2nd year corporate associate and I do a lot of research that turns into drafting client memos on matters of law. I do M&A work but also work for a partner that does a lot of corporate counseling and board/committee advising. So it probably depends on the nature of your practice.
70% of my work is research lmao
10 years in and I still do so much research. I don’t think I can avoid it because I can’t memorize everything. I am in-house, if that makes a difference.
Uh like not very much at all. Maybe if you’re including like research on pubco merger stats or something then a little bit more but I didn’t do really any legal research whatsoever
I agree with Associate #4. 4th year M&A and—not to say it’s a magical existence but—I do next to zero research.
3rd year VC/m&a - zero
