Golftec is decent. I never had them upsell. Do you have a lot of clubs in your area? Ask around with pros do lessons and just find a fit you like. Most of them will do fittings as well.
The only one to avoid for price reasons are club champions. They’ll find a way to get you to spend 5k on a 1k set of clubs.
+1 for club champion,
Also something to consider, if you are planning to get fitted now and actually put in work to improve, your swing is going to drastically change over the next year or two, and your clubs will no longer be a good fit for you.
My 2 cents would be to keep your box set, or get something better (used) if you really want new clubs, improve with lessons + play until you think/feel you've hit a wall, then go get fitted for a set
I just got callaway set I liked when it was on sale on Callaway website and got them fitted at my golf club.
I’ve gone to pga store & club champion. The difference is night and day. I was at club champion for 2-3 hours trying different shaft & head combos, diff weight shafts, etc. PGA is more of a “i’d like to try the new pings” and the hand you it with standard everything …..definitely recommend club champion.
Once you find a set of clubs you’re comfortable with, I would just watch YouTube videos for lessons and drills and practice on the range. Posture and setup good? Got a terrible slice? Need to fix a hard hook? Want to flush your irons and gain more distance? There are videos and drills for all of that. Save a ton of money.
Have gone through fittings with Golfsmith (RIP), Golf Galaxy, PGA Tour Superstore, Club Champion, and directly through PXG over the years. They are all about the same when it comes to the basics, but Club Champion is where you go when you need/want something more than standard.
I like getting multiple opinions before buying, so I’ll usually go through multiple fittings to cross reference my options before settling on a configuration to purchase. I usually test things multiple times at PGA Store or another place that doesn’t charge for a basic fitting. Then I’ll pay for a fitting at a place like Club Champion to confirm previous fittings or get things a little more dialed in. As others have said, Club Champion can be expensive. They’ll look to put you in custom/upgraded shafts and they’ll want to hit you with PURE/alignment of shaft surcharge. Go with a budget and let them know so that they can find you a comparable option. Worst case take their spec sheet and return back to PGA Store and see what alternative options they have without an upcharge.
