The point is to sell you stuff. They’re not overhead, they’re revenue generating. They more than pay for themselves.
Once you realize the whole car business is designed to extract money from the average consumer (in other words, not you) it all makes a lot more sense.

In my experience, they exist for people who simply don’t know better. Sometimes I think what they do is deeply unethical.
I had a service advisor tell me that my BMW needed new brakes… only 10K miles since both the pads and rotors were replaced. I still had 10/32 on the fronts. (New is usually 10-11, depending on the car.)
I asked them about this, and they simply said, “We recommend new pads at 40k miles regardless of depth.” Which is absolutely the dumbest answer possible. Then, I s**t you not, the dude told me 10mm is 1 cm, and tried to show me with his fingers how thin 1cm looks like.
That was the last time I ever went to that dealership.
That my friend is useless positions that are so common in many places and yes it does make everything more expensive.
I just took an offer to work as a service advisor assistant after having applied to numerous places for months now. I’m excited to leave my retail job, but now I’m afraid that I won’t be entering the industry in the most optimal way. Thanks for posting this, it’s given me some more insight on what to expect!
