Stay in an IC role? Or jump to people management?
Goal is to make as much as possible while also being valuable in the market. I feel like the managerial path tends to devalue ones experience as they become less technical over time. Are those feelings valid?

Being a manager won’t restrain you from continuing to contribute, but it may open unexpected doors. Managers will always make more than ICs, be considered first for promotions, and are less prone to being laid off. In the end, management is a position of trust, and they are paid more to make the hard decisions.

As a manager, you will need to play politics and eventually become comfortable with freezing salaries, asking people to work extra hours with no pay, working on weekends, firing people, and doing whatever is needed to keep the BU afloat and maintain a productive team, while trying to keep a healthy team environment with a touch of happiness..

As much as possible in consulting = sales.

So you need to be partner or MD- that usually goes through manager road. If they become devalued then consulting won’t exist. Partner / MD role will continue. If you want to stay technical then you should jump to a tech firm

I’d jump to mgmt. you’ll never make c suite position or SVP levels without being a manager

That makes sense! Thank you!

Why choose?

I'm a manager in software implementation. I still do ~70% technical work. The other ~30% is people mgmt, internal initiatives, and some sales work.

There are many Director level positions in consulting and corporate that still do some technical work

Thanks for the response, I’ve seen a lot of managers that spend 100% of the time on people management, internal initiatives and just sitting on calls everyday. I’d like to think that I’d still be doing technical work if possible.

I agree it’s not either/or and it’s not a one way move. All of my managers have also done technical work - note they did this on top of people mgt so it was more work overall.

More important, I think, is whether you are actually interested in coaching, leading and supporting a team. If you enjoy that part it can be rewarding but if you resent the people stuff and do it just for the resume line you won’t be a great manager. I’ve seen both and the team can tell the difference.

I like leading and supporting teams/people, so based off of that, and all of the comments on this post I should try to shift to management and climb the ladder as fast as I can? if my main goal is to increase my income?

For the new lease, I'm still pending full approval from a condo association as I have to do an in person interview. I have paid first months rent in advance. Is there anyway to get that money back?
