Dude, you're actually asking this? With 14 years of exp, you must be mentoring folks like us on career moves.
Well, I can mentor.. But I'm interested in learning new things... I'm shaping my career towards architecture, so more the better :)
For Data science I would say opt for degree course like upgrad I know it cost a bit but it will pay u later
Rising Star
I tried switching at similar experience.
Narrowly missed few opportunities.
At our experience companies expect deep experience and hence i was not selected even if performed well in technical interview.
So i gave up my DS dream and continued with existing skill set. Moved to leadership role and feel i can make more impact with my existing skillset
You can learn everything for free on youtube and Google you'll find the contents. If you're good with java you can go ahead with DS+java.
Great thanks!!!
Any pointers on where can i get real life project experience?
I am searching for jobs related to testing. Any openings in your company related to testing for 4 year experienced professional would be welcomed
If you have insurance experience then yes
Encouraging.. keep it up with your leaning. Keep posting your leaning and new job. It will encourage me and others as well.

Learning is a life long journey. Your experience is only an advantage to learn it quickly.
I would suggest since you have 14yr exp in Java and oracle then prepare your profile as a java architect expert and additonally add cloud and ML/data science to it.Then it will be a killer combination. Once you get a job with this skillset then you can think of DS/ML as your major. If now you try to switch to DS/ML as major it will be difficult nut to crack and after some failure you will drop that plan.If your exp would have been within 3yrs exp i would have suggested to directly switch.
If your logic is sound and you know programming well, then you should not hesitate to start your career in DS/ML.
The market is unsaturated. You can also look for the MOOC such as MIT short online course or Udacity AI courses.
You can start with Mr. Denis Rothman book on Artificial Intelligence by Example which will teach AI from scratch.
You have enough experience to crack the interview. If you are on LinkedIn, please follow Denis Rothman.
All the best to your learning journey.
