Still pretty fresh out of college and wondering if there are any career milestones I should be working toward? All through college, graduating and getting a job were the main things, but now I’m here and not sure where to go next.

The best approach is probably to learn as much as you can in your current position and think about where you want to go in the business world. As part of that, do as much networking as you can. The best networking doesn't really happen at events designed for it, but rather just by organically communicating with people you work with. If you develop a rapport with coworkers, their contacts can become your contacts at some point. As you learn more about your job, and about the jobs of other people, your future path may become apparent to you.

That makes sense I hadn’t thought about networking that way but I like the idea of just building real connections as I go

Now that you're here i think it's fine to take some time and get used to the corporate world. It's okay to take a year or two and really understand what you like and don't like and where you may see yourself going. I'm 8 years into it and I'm still reflecting during the year.

That’s reassuring thank you I think I’ve been putting pressure on myself to figure it all out fast

I think you can use titles and salaries as milestones to work toward. I personally always wanted to work towards being in management because I knew I enjoyed leadership roles. but there are other ways to grow besides growing into management if that's not what you want.

Yeah I think I’m still figuring out what growth looks like for me but I do like the idea of having something concrete to aim for

I would encourage you to live in the moment. Life isn't a series of milestones, it's about enjoying the adventure. You're here; you're a professional. Congratulations! Take each day as it comes and don't worry about what's next. The time will pass anyway.

Appreciate that reminder I definitely need help slowing down and enjoying where I am right now

I agree that networking is a great idea in an organic environment. It's so easy to just get caught up in the first job that pops up, but I really would take the time to meet new people and ask questions about their role to know if that's maybe the path you want to go down. And like already mentioned, you may even be given a few contacts along the way!

Start putting as much as you can into your company 401k. Open a Roth IRA and max that out. If you have access to a HSA max that out and invest it!
