Any part of a page can be put to good use and comprise good design, that's true. Footers are generally utilitarian, and that's for good reason, users expect to find useful links there. Heat map research would likely tell us that most eyes never land there, but putting design elements in the footer can work for those who do venture that far.
No, I am not saying that the user's path will change.
I am more inclined to believe that the user experience should be pleasant from the first screen to the last, and perhaps it is through the footer that you will gain a new customer because you spent a little more time and a little more resources than necessary.
Interesting. It can help to strengthen your brand, and usually, where our legal and compliance text goes. What else would you recommend going there aside from brand images?
