the longshoreman union turned down a 50% raise over 6 years and demanded 77% instead, how much is your agency giving you this year?

As they always do, a bunch of unimaginative people will reply that “a union could never work in advertising” for some unspecified reason. But I’m gonna ask anyone reading this not to listen to them, and to please go look up for yourself how successful unionization has been in tech. For example, when you’re laid off in tech, your severance is often measured in months, not weeks. Imagine how comforting it would be to have that security right now. That’s just one of a thousand examples. There is nothing inherent to advertising that makes a union impossible.

Good. Who cares what workers are demanding? The CEOs of shipping companies are making MILLIONS.

I’ll never understand why people don’t align themselves with union workers and never question the execs and shareholders who are bleeding us all dry while dodging taxes like it’s their job.

Unionizing is the only way to get livable working conditions. It terrifies big business which means it works in giving employees power. Look what’s happened to the middle class since Reagan/ Thatcher dismantled unions. Doesn’t feel so middley anymore does it?

damn where are you at, could use that rn

A 50% raise is nice by any standard for doing no more additional responsibilities. Per the WSJ, the striking workers are asking for a base wage increase from 39/hr to 69/hr. This is base wage. They are all eligible for overtime. The leader at the front of this movement made just under 1M a year last year and the average mid / senior in this business makes well into the 6 figures. I have a friend who’s on the west coast as a Longshoreman who makes just under 300k.

Unions can do what they wish, it’s their right. But seeing this co-opted by political campaigns and the like as “fighting for a living wage” is ridiculous. Greedy much? How many of you would turn down a 50% bump in a negotiation?

There is a point where requests become unreasonable and are not supported by the economics of the surrounding business. The striking workers reference fighting back against automation. Well, this is noble, but most ports in the world are much more automated than ours in the US, which is one of the reasons why our goods cost more.

You can’t fight progress by squeezing your employer to the point that they can’t afford you anymore.

I have no skin in this game, and hope for a good outcome for all. It’s hard for me to look at this objectively and feel sorry for the workers in any way. 50%…. While fighting automation. Just seems misguided. My 2 cents.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment here on raising our wages in this industry. However, as someone who works in large agencies and has also owned and ran a prod co the wages I make now and paid as an employer were good and about the limit of what the billable rates will bear to hit margins. Company’s need profit, it’s their only reason to exist. Having seen what people make and what they are billed out at, mid senior wages are not unreasonable in this business. The issue in my view is more holistic, the money is just not there anymore to pay advertising workers wheelbarrows full of money. It used to be, not anymore. It’s sad.

The root challenge with unions or any type of brute force is at some point the employers can’t pay it, it’s not contributing to solvency - so they jack prices and the clients, being wooed by the next shiny / automated / cheaper / offshore thing moves the scope elsewhere and more and more are out of work. It’s literally what happened to Detroit, that paired with lazy r&d and declining value proposition for what was being sold.

Considering taking a position with a small-cap in the US trying to build their legal department. The title is standard “counsel” although the work would be with the senior leadership team and reporting to the GC in Europe. How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.

Can someone explain how billable hours work? At a new agency and although I had to fill timesheets at my previous agencies, they were mainly used to ensure we weren’t over servicing a client/for setting the appropriate retainer for contract renewals. I asked ppl at my agency but haven’t gotten a proper explanation. I get the impression that billing to the agency admin code isn’t recommended, and my manager said he bills everything to client codes, but that doesn’t make sense to me .
