There is so much talk again about return to office mandates. I calculated what three extra commute days a week would actually cost me in fuel and time. It is not just convenience. It is money. If our company increases office days, could we you expect compensation to reflect that?

I would love to say yes, but the reality is, they aren't going for it. We have already raised this issue with my company and they basically said too bad, so sad. They don't care if it is costing you more or not.

That response sounds familiar. Companies frame it as policy rather than cost. From an employee side though, the financial and time impact is real. It quietly changes the value equation of the role.

In a word, no, there is absolutely no way that’s going to happen. I don’t I’ve heard of a single company offering compensation for RTO. Your employer will increase your in office days and dare you to quit.

That blunt reality is what I keep hearing too. RTO often feels less like negotiation and more like a directive. It definitely makes people rethink what flexibility is actually worth.

I would not expect compensation because they've never compensated people for commuting. I mean, isn't that how it all used to be before Covid? But I would seriously consider finding another job because my job is very far away.

That is true, commuting was always normal before. I think the difference now is that people have experienced another way of working. Once flexibility exists, it becomes part of how people evaluate a role.

Ummmmmm… no. At least not from what the majority of companies have done. This is back to being an employer job market so you’ve got little leverage unless your job is one that’s still highly competitive.

Leverage really is the key point. Some roles still have it, others do not. The challenge is figuring out where the market power actually sits before pushing back.

Doubt it. Just the shared cost of doing business

That phrase sums up how many companies see it. From the employee perspective though, those shared costs can shift how sustainable a role feels long term.
