There are so many jobs in-house with an insurance company that are different from traditional insurance defense. If you’re close to an office near the big carriers (liberty mutual, travelers, Chubb etc) I’d recommend searching their respective website for legal jobs and seeing what’s available. Surety or specialty insurance for example, plus a lot of room to move up and pivot if you can get past working for an issuance company. Good luck!
Are you looking to go in-house with an insurance company? Many folks leverage connections with their clients’ legal departments to find an in house job. You could discretely ask some in-house counsel you’ve worked with if they are hiring. If you’re looking to change to new industry, that’ll be trickier.
Regarding maternity leave, many companies require working for at least a year before you can get paid parental leave, so you’d probably have to take unpaid time off if you switched jobs soon. When my first child was born, I decided to leave my job at a firm so I could enjoy the time. I did not have another job lined up so it was a leap of faith, but it was a really special time. I found a new job seven months later. It all depends on your accepted level of risk and financial situation. I’ve found that this profession is actually pretty understanding of career gaps for mothers (I’m a dad so for me it was perhaps more risky).
I'd rather try something new-ish as far as industries go, I'm pretty burnt out on PI stuff. And I hate to risk talking to my clients about it and having it get back to this firm I'm with now.
My firm doesn't provide paid maternity leave anyways, so I'm forced to take the time off without pay, although I have private insurance to help offset the lack of income. It's more of the "wow, she's only going to be here for a couple months before she leaves for a few months, why would we bother" that I'm concerned about.
I am also considering just waiting to look while I'm on maternity leave and not focused on getting the job done, I'm just curious if it's something of a turn-off when looking.
