Schools in charlotte are not that great, unfortunately. There’s a few private schools but expect tuition to be $40K plus a year for one kid. You can look in the Ballantyne area, for that price range you’ll be able to get a few bedrooms. As you move closer to uptown/ Southpark area you will be priced out for 3+ bedrooms decent house.
I moved from DC to Charlotte in 2020. I’m happy we did it for many reasons. It’s not a city that draws tourists but it’s a great place to be! CLT airport has flights everywhere. You can get to the beach or mountains in 3 hours or less. Lots of lakes in the area to cool off in the summer.
Here are my recommendations:
1) Look at Union County, NC (Weddington) or Fort Mills, SC for school districts with great reputations. Think of it like the Ashburn or Rockville of DC. Consider commute time and distance.
2) If you want to be a little closer to uptown Charlotte, consider neighborhoods that feed into Audrey Kell, Providence, South Meck. Also Cornelius and Davidson have great schools, but think of 77 like 66 in DC when it comes to commutes. We live in Matthews and feed into Butler HS, but I think it has lower ratings than these other schools. We do love Matthews, though and would recommend it. Look at Providence Plantation — big homes and No HOA. All of these areas have strong private schools and charters close by.
3) If you need a realtor, Laura Werb was excellent to work with coming from out of state.
