Oh, I'm sure that happens. If you just happen to read news stories about some event somewhere, you will start to see related things popping up in your Google News feed, and I suppose in other places. If I want to look up something kind of random I'll sometimes open an incognito window and Google it there, just so I won't be seeing stories about for the next week. What a world.
Yeah, you're probably onto something. They way some of these algorithms work is that they'll push stuff to you even harder if you already showed interest in content that has similar themes. Like if I watch a couple of videos on learning guitar then my YT feed will get flooded with that type of content. I can only imagine it's the same for articles that get you to click on them. They adapt frighteningly quick too

Oh 100000%. There’s money to be made in trafficking bad news. That’s always been a thing. See “Yellow Journalism” it’s hard to stay informed without being depressed by the bad news all the time.
