This job consistently makes me feel like a failure and I legit feel like I’m fighting suicide every other day. Why post this here? To say that chronic depression is not an abnormality in big law.

Have you seen a therapist and/or tried medication? Made a world of difference for my depression. Being in an unhealthy environment is one thing, but finding a way to manage (or leave) that environment is a lot less daunting when you have a solid emotional foundation independent of your job. It can become easy for work to permeate (and poison) that foundation over time.

Yeah that depression is real. SSRI/antidepressants may help if you can find the right one for you

like

Yes, that is ideal. Taking the life vest doesn’t replace the goal of getting out of the water. Unfortunately, many are unable to immediately change their environment, even if they are drowning in dirty water.

It’s just a job, man. If you’re this good at something you hate, imagine how good you’d be at something you love. Don’t waste your one life doing something you hate.

Rude. Someone is clearly posting about a legitimate mental and emotional health matter and you are acting like because they worked hard to be where they are professionally they shouldn't have these feelings. You should be ashamed to respond in this manner. Very poor form.

I'm aghast to see some of the cavalier responses here. May strangers treat your loved ones who are undoubtedly quietly fighting their battles with more dignity and kindness than you have shown to this poster.

You’re never stuck in anything forever! You deserve a life that you love, even if it feels impossible to walk away from right now. I really hope things get better for you.

I've become really jaded about consulting. I find all so often you need to tell the client what they want to hear to keep their business and I feel like so much of the what I recommend doesn't actually get implemented. I'm looking to make a career switch so I can both create and execute on my strategies. A product management path seems very promising for this.

Does anyone who switched from consulting to product management have any recommendations of h helpful PM books, courses, or programs?

Associate at an AmLaw 100 firm doing patent work. I applied to a part time masters program to try to pivot to a different technical field (still doing patent work, but in something that interests me more than what I’m doing now). Do I try to stick it out at the firm while getting the masters, ask for a reduced hours schedule, or get a part time, non-legal job so I can focus more on the program (one year).

Boomer. I am in between jobs. Laid off in 10/21 after 16+ yrs, with an ABA firm. RIF. Still on excellent terms. Took my time living off generous package and didn’t seriously start applying until 01/22. Made a rookie mistake and accepted first offer.
Turns out job wasn’t as advertised. Mutual parting of ways 3/22. Due diligence is critical.
Now interviewing a LOT. Some temp work, I still have “it”. I relate to all gens. Willing to mentor AND learn from all. Tech savvy, CTE from day one. Leads?

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.
