I told my manager once my morning sickness started to get really bad, so only about six weeks in. I wanted to make sure someone was aware so that if I needed to take time or call out more often due to being sick, it didn't seem totally out of the blue. However, my boss is a woman, so that's definitely a different scenario than what you're dealing with. I imagine you'll probably want to tell them soon, but I also understand that it's a delicate situation. Do you think they'll be understanding about it?
I completely understand your hesitation. When I was pregnant, I waited until I was around five months along to tell my team. It’s tough, especially when you’re the only woman on the team and fear being treated differently. Once you do disclose, I recommend documenting everything to ensure you're not overlooked for opportunities or treated unfairly. Have you thought about how you might approach the conversation?
I waited until my second trimester, it felt like a good balance of safety and timing. It also gave me time to really think about how to approach the conversation. People are usually supportive when it comes to pregnancy. Tell them when you feel comfortable, but also give enough time for maternity leave planning!
Think I was around 6 months when I had the conversation officially at work. Generally speaking you really aren’t required to say, just have to give a reasonable notice before taking leave. I’d keep in mind if you do not make them aware you won’t have any basis for discrimination, FMLA, so on. It’s between what you are comfortable doing and what you have to do.
I waited until I was really showing and couldn't hide it anymore. It's not anyone you work with business that you're pregnant. Tell them when you feel comfortable
