We had to double down on getting serious about being frugal and creative when we had our child. I think a lot of lifestyle creep comes from trying to keep your kids happy and entertained. We found a lot of creative ways to do this on a budget. But it definitely took a lot more work and mindfulness.
Our daycare now offers all kinds of extra options, from Soccer to a performing arts thing. We’ve decided rather than have them do it all, they’ll need to pick and choose some.
I spent around $40k on each kid per year just on activities, sports, etc. 5 kids here

Our spend pre-kids was about $60k.
After the first kid it went up to $80k, and after the second it went up to $110k.
Most of the increase in spend due to daycare costs; kids clothes / food / toys can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.
Post-FIRE our spend increase to $150k but that’s because we now spend 4-5 months slow traveling across different countries in Europe / Asia with the kids.
Yeah same as most other responses, spending went up but I also look at it positively, kids helped me balance the future looking frugality with the live in the now for overall better life balance.
Congrats on the upcoming little one! As others have mentioned, daycare is pricey esp in higher COL locations. I think we started closed to 28k year at newborn daycare and are around 25 now, it got slightly cheaper as they got older. Probably another 250-300/mo in activities like swim class and sports. Our hope is that we are able to save 50% of the daycare expense once kindergarten starts only paying for after school care, but who the heck knows. Other than that, spending has pretty much stayed the same. Maybe a little less dining out but travel gets more expensive so it all balances out

Super helpful perspective. Thanks!

Appreciate the insights, y’all. Our first is due in January and trying to set expectations ahead of time :)
Look up daycare costs. Ours was $30k per year. We could cash flow that fine, but a lot of people can’t.
