In the past, I’d talk about what can I do to get promoted / what skills can I improve. Now that I don’t care, I don’t know how to use these scheduled sessions. Do I fake it? What are folks with similar feelings doing?
You could just say you want to get more familiar with specific skill set or whatever your goals are.
I don’t want to get promoted, I actually haven’t thought about it till I read this post ahahaha. I guess they’ll know if you’re interested because you don’t bring it up.
Thanks and good luck to you as well!
OP, going through this same scenario, but point blank told my manager I don’t want to promote because I don’t want the responsibility and stress of the next level up. I told them I will still participate in pursuits and support practice development. After telling them, I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders! I’m also looking to leave consulting and looking for ways to build my network and transferable skills to make a pivot easier. I don’t have a transition plan in place but thinking next year sometime I make the jump. So - during my 1:1s, I plan to share updates on what I’m working on, if there’s anything I’m struggling with or want their guidance on, and what else I’m interested in doing within the company. Good luck!
That’s great! Good for you 😊

Sounds like one way ticket to a pip
Eh, it’s debatable. The next level up for us just saw extreme layoffs so in this case it could be up AND out. Plus from a staffing perspective it’s much better to have top performing lower bands who will do a good, reliable job. Definitely safe where I’m at 🤷
I asked for promo this year. Now I regret asking because now leaders will question why I raised it and now am backtracking. I just don’t care to put in the effort to get others to advocate for me. If my actions to do my job well every day aren’t enough, then forget about it.
Thanks for sharing. I’m also in this boat. I give my best in client deliverables but not doing extra for BD or practice development. Haven’t withdrawn my previously communicated wish for promotion but also haven’t raised it.
What’s a performance manager?
In most consulting firms, a “manager” could mean engagement/project manager who you just work with/report to on a project and then you have a performance manager who’s responsible for your overall, annual performance process like doing your review and advocating for you at year-end etc. Unlike the engagement manager who could change every project, you’re performance manager will stay with you until you get reassigned. Hope this helps.
