To a human or a machine? Dictation to a human seems silly, unless you are a truly awful typist.
Human
At my old job several people used digital AND the old school tapes. If it works for you, who cares!!! Personally, I didn’t mind transcribing. If you need someone to do it on the side, I’d be willing!
I haven't met a lawyer who still uses dictation instead of typing in ages. I've seen some people who do it (with software, not a transcriber) as a way to talk through issues but then they still end up retyping a lot of it.
I've done it in two settings, first while traveling I had to write a memo so I used talk to text on my phone to transfer a hand written memo to text, instead of typing it by phone, and second, I've done the "talk through" approach and then had genAI review my internal debate and expand upon arguments and counter arguments to highlight things I might have missed
I’ve worked a few firms that used the digital dictation (when the attorney or paralegal docks the recorder, those items will go to the dedicated assistant to transcribe….they appear date/time order and they can mark priority before downloading which puts it to top in red. I love transcribing but since some health issues shuttered my legal job, I’m seriously looking to get back out there
I know senior partners who insist it is faster than typing. I never got the hang of it.
