I just went freelance at the beginning of the summer. The hours I was working didn’t make sense. I wasn’t getting paid enough! So I’m on my husbands insurance with our kid and have been freelancing ever since. I don’t care about the titles right now (actually anymore). If I want to go back FT I’ll probably do it after the kids are older. I work remote. I have time now to go to doctor appointments, grocery shopping and go on dates with my husband! Oh and I’m getting normal sleep.
I’m also freelancing for the first time. It’s been good for me. I turned down full time but still get tempted. I’m happy to talk too. This was a huge change for me.
I prefer full time mostly because I prefer having a set schedule and not being responsible for generating business. I think if you want to go full time the key is to find a workplace that values your you and your contributions versus being a butt in a chair, which is why I went client side after I had my second.
I’m full time and know many other mommas that are full time too. I also know of several mommas from creative and production who’ve been freelancing for several years while their kiddos are in daycare. The freelancers design their schedules to allow for breaks in projects to line up with the kiddo’s breaks or to take vacation. In any case, you’ll have to set boundaries and stick to them to avoid burning out on all fronts...still a concept I’m working on! Best of luck! Hope you find a solution that works for you and your family, also the decision you make now doesn’t have to be a forever decision.
I think it totally depends on how much you make, what daycare or nanny costs in your market, how many kids you have, and if they are school age yet or not. For us it was definitely a financial calculation. My husband is a photographer and *could* freelance - but currently he is FT at an agency, and makes enough plus healthcare and 401k that it doesn’t make sense right now for him to freelance. Once the kids are older (currently 4 and 1), we have less bills and risk, it will be an option!
