There’s a few buildings right next to alewife, but it’s not very walkable so be prepared to drive everywhere… it’s not very quaint to me so to me it’s the stress and noise of the city without any of the upside, but it’s close to the city and your commute would be good (would only be important if you’re 3+ days in person).
If it were me, I’d consider Davis square area before alewife.
The "north cambridge" half - west of Mass Ave - was a great place to live for me. Not the shiny anonymous buildings in Alewife proper, but the neighborhood along the bike path.
More isolated from the homeless problem in Davis Sq (I am empathetic but crime is def on the rise), 15min walk from either Davis OR Alewife.
Between Harvey st and Rindge is a great place to look.
I DID have a car, groceries are a little harder w/o.
