Tip to fight age discrimination! Incomplete resumes.

I only ever had 2 jobs: my own business for 15 years then a Chemist for 30. Was wondering why I was getting no activity with all that experience. People do math.

45 years working puts me in my 60s so I left my business off the resume and suddenly I was 15 years younger and began getting interest! Fortunately for me I finished the degree after closing the business so there is no gap between graduating and getting the job as Lab Manager.

I’m glad you are getting interest now, but that’s unfortunate what you had to do for it. I’ve definitely been more cautious adding years and certain jobs because I know it is showing my age.

All experience should be good

That's a good strategy. It shouldn't have to be that way, but it's just a fact that sometimes our experience works against us. There's so much age discrimination in business, yet it can never be proven. Yet your experiment does provide proof that it happens.

like

Thanks. As a Chemist I spent 3 decades devising experiments to prove or disprove stuff so this one was just obvious to me, but felt that I should share the results here because I am sure there are others who may benefit from it.

I may not be able to work in a lab ever again due to my age. I'm back to making websites and selling collectibles (it's always good to have backup skills!).

To be honest you only really need to put the relevant experience! Once you have that much experience I'd think the years aren't worth mentioning.

like

General advice is to limit a rez to the last ten years. Re degree, don't list years for that!

like

Never heard that one before! How do you leave out they year of your Degree(s) if it's one of those "Easy Apply" forms and they require it, making it impossible to submit the form without that information?

That type is increasingly common these daye and would ruin this method for people who graduated longer in the past.

World's best practice companies have placed a high value on experience and soft skills and leadership capabilities to see SQEP
as being much more valuable than any inexperienced or mono talent younger applicant.

Learning takes time as does team building and inexperience is often trial and error.

If you have a SQEP that contributes a single innovation or idea to a project that pays his/her salary for a year, imagine what a SQEP can offer for a year onboard and how a team can achieve more, sooner.

Software is a recent tool but experience is undeniably very valuable.

Don't ever underestimate or overlook the calm confidence and knowledgiable contributions from a mature applicant.

Good luck! At least you wont have to worry about age discrimination unless it's for being too young.

Well, you're optimistic! At least if you're a pessimist you're never disappointed.

I would love to believe you but the number of interviews I have gotten (one) (not even close to in my field - some recruiter felt sorry for me or something) prove that times are not what they should be.

Looks like it's out of the lab and back to the porn industry for me! I got my 1st line of side jobs making websites for a Dominatrix and some of her friends. Best people I ever worked for in my life!! I don't play corporate games well, I just get results. But I made some major breakthroughs for an antifreeze company that needed environmental friendliness, just ... nobody cares.

Hi! I have a quick question and could use some advice:

I have 1 job offer that is an hour away and pays 45k, after negotiations (Research Associate Position at a University) .

I have just interviewed for a position closer to home and a base salary of 65k, but haven’t heard back from them in about 2 days (He said he would make a decision by yesterday and I’ve reached out).
I have to decide on the first offer by Thursday but I haven’t heard back from the second yet. Thoughts on next move?
