I’m a new manager and got added to a new engagement. Everything is overmy head. Usually I catch up within a month. But this engagement is very very different. It will take me a while to get a hang of. The positive is that there is a lot of learning. But I had goals of being a sm in a year or 2 and I don’t see that happening in this engagement. What do you guys think, should do? It’s a huge engagement so it’s room to grow. Should I just suck it up and try?

Is it normal for a smaller firm (less than 100 attys) to expect biglaw level hours without the pay? Current first year who has been at my first job since September, making $85k. My firm’s billable requirements aren’t super high at 1900, but the partner I work for has told me that she’d like me to bill 2200.I know there’d tons of ppl in BL billing close to 3k but I feel like this is way too much for my current pay. My salary is the same as other associates who are expected to just bill 1900

Partners: I’m a sr. associate managing multiple cases without a whole lot of oversight. A few of the cases I am managing are very large, very fast, and very contentious. I try to be as immersed in the details as I can, but can’t know everything. I rely on others to give me accurate and actionable facts. 1st year. I have a decent amount of client email/phone interaction. One partner frequently asks me to communicate with clients, and the partner tells me to ask if I have any questions before emailing the client.

I almost always respond to the partner with my thoughts and ask partner whether P agrees with my thoughts, prior to emailing client. At what point should I be skipping that step and just email client? I’m worried about making a mistake, but most of the time P agrees with my “draft”

How many firms is too many? I’ve practiced 13 years. Since I was a 1st year associate, every 3 years or so I’ve been recruited for another opportunity that is hard to pass up. I’ve been at my current firm 3 years and got the call again, again about an opportunity that is hard to pass up. I don’t like having a reputation of a flight risk, but this keeps happening. Should I decline to pursue the opportunity just so I have a longer track record at my current firm? This will be my 4th if I move.
