Today's tip: Your resume (and cover letter) should target the specific position. The easiest way to do this is to edit your professional summary and key skills sections (which should comprise the top third of your resume) to reflect the qualifications required or desired in the job posting. Be honest – only reference those skills you have!

I recently had an initial interview for a technical recruiter position. The guy on the phone stated that this is not a 9-5 job and long hours are expected. I proceed to ask how much PTO is offered and he said that is not recommend within the first 6 months of working and the harder you work the more PTO you receive. From that conversation, I saw instant red flags. Any thoughts?

Asking for a friend:
My friend received two job offers for Account Executive roles: a Mid-Market role with Confluent and an Enterprise role with ThoughtSpot. He’s conflicted because Confluent is a more established company, ThoughtSpot is Pre-IPO. Confluent is a lucrative product to sell and has established SDR reps so there’s a good blend of inbound and outbound sales. Thoughtspot is more of a startup culture where most of the sales comes from outbound and it’s a tougher sell.

Random, but valid/persistent thought.

After 2 years of a pandemic and working independently for many years, I am not feeling interviews AT ALL. There are points in the interview where I want to just say "Look! Either hire me or don't".

How can I get over this feeling? I'm over the whole "stand in the line of fire to prove how good I am" bs. Any recommendations for getting over this or possible industries to pivot into to avoid bs interview processes and ghosting?

I've been exploring exit opportunities for a few months and still holding out for the right opportunity. However, I've had A LOT of recruiters reach out to me for positions that are way below my current salary. They do the whole "your background and expertise is exactly what we're looking for" then turn around and offer a salary range that is 20k below my current level. My resume clearly says I've got 10yrs experience and an MBA. I **don't think* I should be getting offers of 80k-100k

Additional Posts in Resume Tips

Let's talk about keywords. Virtually all big companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to manage their job search process. Systems vary but many use keyword scanning to identify the most relevant resumes submitted based on the extent to which they reference keywords from the job posting. This means you should consider targeting your resume to each posting and definitely do so for top choice jobs. Keywords will tend to be hard skills found in the qualifications sections.

One of the biggest resume mistakes I see is focusing solely on job duties. Yes, you should include relevant responsibilities, but you should frame them in a way that highlights your skills. And include achievements wherever possible. Quantify them if you can. A good way to frame them is "Achieved X by doing Y."

Resume length: one page or two?

It depends! If you're a recent grad or junior in your career, stick to one. Once you're a few years or jobs out, 1.5-2 pages is fine. Even if you're very senior, try to stick to two. Many hiring managers will not read beyond that, and your resume should be a highlight reel anyway. Note: these general rules apply to US-based professional positions. Other countries and industries (like acadamia) may follow different norms.

Starting us off with an important tip: Your resume is a marketing document, not an autobiography. It should include relevant jobs, responsibilities, and perhaps most importantly, achievements. Where you can quantify an accomplishment or just talk up a major project you led at work or in an internship, do so. The point is to make the hiring manager think, “Wow, I need to talk to this person! They seem like a good fit!”
