To be fair, the same could be said about any facet of advertising. I have brand clients who don’t understand branding, social clients who don’t know how the platforms work and digital clients that I swear don’t even own computers.
It’s a bummer, I definitely get the frustration.
Had a client tell me two weeks ago that “banner ads are new media” and I fell to the floor. Literally.
They get a MBA, then get hired into companies who value other things besides media experience, and many times those hiring managers dont know much about media so it's not something they're able to suss out. Then sometimes they volunteer to be a media lead, which is an intimidating and complicated area, and high maintenance. Lots of people would rather let someone else deal with it. And if lots of the marketing team has that attitude then the bar isnt high for the experience of the people who volunteer to work on it. Im sure there are other paths but thats what ive seen
I feel that so hard. We have a woman in charge of the website for a client and I swear she doesn’t understand how computers work, let alone the internet. 😑 she’s also been doing this for at least the 2 years we have worked with them and still doesn’t retain how to do simple tasks we’ve explained to her a million times
Dude....I think about this EVERY DAY.
Many client side companies allow employees to rotate roles every so often. If you have “marketing” experience they feel you can pop into any marketing related role. Then you end up with high level leaders with little experience in a particular function. 🤷🏻♀️

I've found this to be true especially in Geo markets with a thin talent pool
