The fact that people are like "what is a black history month logo look like" idfk just make one. Or do something for it. We creative people, we can figure it out for sure.
...well no, of course you personally should not make one in a vacuum, @SD1. But take a look at what the Senior Copywriter posted downthread. Think it shows how this is absolutely possible if we commit to doing something
- The way I've seen companies in our industry honor BHM has usually been through content and PR efforts— sometimes month long series' shining a light on black employees, events...etc.
-Outside of client campaigns, companies highlight Pride by changing their logos on social media...It's the least amount of effort.
- Also the Pan-African flag represents black men and women. The rainbow flag can rep every race and gender. Companies are more comfortable with changing their logo to the latter because it appeals to the larger public.
Ahhh right. There you go. The original question.
Great points made CS1!
Because there are white people who are LGBT.
Absolutely agree. White and male, esp.
It could also be that we need more black people in advertising. 10 yrs in the biz I only come across 2 black creatives. Its crazy.
Three.
One example of a company changing their logo for black history month.
TBH I think brands changing their logos to rainbows starting June 1st and then immediately switching back by June 30th is so insulting. Most of the companies still find it acceptable to discriminate based on sexual orientations (whether that be firing, not hiring LGTBQIA individuals, etc) but want to seem woke. It’s so transparent and pandering that...just...keep it to the whole thing! I don’t need rainbow Doritos for Pride month and I don’t want black Cheerios for black history month.
I guess Pride’s colors are prettier? Love is more acceptable to promote than racial equality?
We’re forgetting who the real enemy is here: insecure cis white men
You at you being all cisphobic
What would they change it too
@MediaDirector1 @StrategyDirector1
The pan African flag is a representation of the African diaspora. Again, you could do a google, instead of attempting to insult other people.
I honestly just think rainbow color is more eye-catching and fun, which causes people to adopt it more. I wouldn’t over think it. This is coming from a Gay POC.
You’ve just highlighted the problem.
What would a black history month logo look like. We should start our own rainbow, thoughts? I know companies would use it
There’s literally a black American flag. It’s the Pan-African flag.
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say the exploitation of corporations using Pride as a way to goad and gather likes and support from the LGBT community is sinister and why I left advertising in the first place. Sephora doesn’t historically empower the LGBTQIA community it exists to make people feel bad about their natural bodies and use cosmetics to alter their appearance to society’s standards.
In the name of pride my agency rolled out a policy that asked us to claim our pronouns in our email signature line. I sort get the intent to be welcoming but sorta don’t feel right about it. Maybe too cliche or forced?
The bar is low, but visibility and embracing preferred pronouns is important for the enby/trans community. Would I prefer they make guarantees, do pro Bono work for LGBTQIA orgs, make donations/do fundraising - sure.
But it's a hell of a lot more than my agency is doing, despite them being one of the many making their logos rainbow colored. 😒
I'd bring it up, but I'm not out at work because most people still think of gay straight in a binary, and don't actually feel comfortable coming out. Go figure.
What about Women's History Month? And Asian Pacific American Month? National Hispanic Heritage Month? And? And?
Who decides which months get which "level" of celebration/prominence?
If anyone did this I guarantee they would get some kind of immediate blowback. And what in the world would it look like?
Someone would be offended by something. The idea, the execution, management, or all of the above.
My agency doesn't even have MLK Day off
it seems like most people dont even remember black history month exists
