Disagree. We just shutdown our entire economy to save predominately elderly non working age people... something we didn’t even do when young working aged people were being killed by the Spanish flu.
In all honesty we are more sensitive than ever.
I don’t know how you made the leap from my response to the belief that I don’t travel. Seems like you’re the overly sensitive one. (For the record, I travel internationally multiple times per year. I’m also a 2nd gen Indian-American).
I also don’t understand your point about Mumbai. India also went on lockdown because they knew the rate of transmission would be even more devastating given the living and health conditions in India. Dozens of countries globally went on lockdown. Not because of social media panic, but because that’s how you contain a virus.
What worse issues plaguing us? Are you trying to compares Covid to Global warming or obesity or something else? They’re not even remotely the same thing. Most of us on FB frequent airports on a regular basis. You’re now risking bringing something back home with you and infecting your family or you’re risking infecting your client and team members, who could then infect their families back home. These are not normal risks. I understand my place of privilege that my job security, income, and remote work opportunities don’t have any of the pressures of person living paycheck-to-paycheck. But that same person incurs the exact same risk by going to work. Why do you think minorities are being disproportionately affected by covid?
Chief
No, it’s about the same that it’s always been: white life is valuable, POC life isn’t.
M 2 - hi, hope you are doing well. I am coming from a place of curiosity and would like to know why you said “if you want POC lives to be more valuable, start showing some respect and value for each other and stop killing your own people” in response to D1 saying that POC life isn’t valued? Does killing each other upset me? Yes. But POC are disproportionately killed by the very people who took a oath to serve and protect us. Please understand that these are two very different issues and one cannot and should not be mentioned while discussing the other. Your statement to me says that we need to show and prove our value and worthiness to you by not killing each other, when we ALL should be respecting and valuing one another. Have you ever wondered why you never hear the terms “white on white crime” “Asian on Asian crime” etc? Because they don’t want to criminalize and dehumanize those very lives. But why are black people the exception to that? Because they want to criminalize us. And once you do that, you dehumanize us, and then we see people saying “well they kill each other any ways, so why are they so outraged when a cop kills a black person?” Do you see and understand how a statement like that is so hurtful and painful for us to hear? Trust me, we know we shouldn’t be killing each other and are upset about that. People kill each other unfortunately. But when a system has been put in place to oppress POC, and an innocent black life is taken by the very person who should have been protecting them when they say “I can’t breathe” is the reason there’s outrage and anger. I hope you understand where I am coming from and I would like to learn where you are coming from too.
Always has been.
