Wanted to get a pulse on partner charge hour requirements at firms through this bowl - newly admitted and at my top 50 firm we have a charge hour goal of 1,000+ hours? Not sure how the economics of an engagement can work with a partner charging so much time at our bill rates and expect any sort of realization metric to be met…do other forms have partner charge hour goals?

I’m Deloitte. What’s a charge hour goal?

In all seriousness, your margin contribution (with your accounts and the team you have) should be what drives your performance in my opinion

like

2nd that. It’s not even a metric that’s tracked, at least not on my end, I probably charged less than 150 hours last year and still exceeded expectations. For reasons mentioned above.

I’ve seen 1000-1100 hour goals for audit partners . To the extent you bring in profitable work at good margins and are growing your book no one is chasing you for not meeting those goals

Local firm partner in tax. I charge 1,200-1,300 hours per year. I get 100% realization on my time.

Yes. I am in a top 20 firm with a charge hour goal of 1,200. It is definitely challenging to balance the charge hour goal with gross margin on engagements.

What’s your expected managed book? I’m about 10-15% time in compliance and 30% or more in consulting engagements.

About 1,000 is standard but I’ve never had anyone question hours, which for me are less than that in a normal year. If you are generating new business it’s unlikely anyone would question it. With staffing shortages, definitely seeing more partner time in the weeds. Combine that with price squeezing and yeah realization is not good in many cases.

Big 4. No one cares about partner utilization. I’m first year and at only 30-35%
1,000 plus hours a year is insane. Are you a nonequity partner and not asked to go to market and just focus on managing book of business?

Full equity and 30 years under my belt. Nobody ever asks me about hours and I’m usually around 800-900. On a 2600 hour year that’s like 30+ percent. Not everyone is a rainmaker and for those 1000 is average.

So what are your average billable hours ?

Partner client hours in my experience has been used to determine partner capacity to take on either new clients or other responsibilities.

1300 is expectation here. 2300 total.hours

Top 20 firm, partners forced to be in the weeds, primarily due to poor leverage, and leadership doesn’t understand the poor realization. I dont understand how you can be in leadership and not understand how this works. Lower tier firms keep all their garbage clients which drags everything and everyone down.

I have passed the screening for BCG and McK, and will perform Casey and Imbellus respectively this weekend. Applied with 8 YOE in petrochemical industry. My question is about case interview preparation, I have been mainly practicing candidate-led style so far and don't have much info about interviewer-led approach that McK utilizes. Considering short time-frame to prepare, which strategy should I follow? Are these styles very different?

When does the recruiter-candidate relationship really end? Everyone says ~6 months but is that 6 months of radio silence? Or is that 6 months from when you authorized to submit apps. Do you have to reapply after 6 months? Nothing is really clear. And what’s to stop someone from just terminating the relationship and reapplying by themselves. If it ever comes up, can’t you just explain that it didn’t work out with the recruiter?
