Any words of wisdom for managing an increasingly intense workload as a junior associate? Im corporate/transactional but because of my specialization I’m being brought into litigation matters for regulatory analysis. As such, I have 4 separate groups giving me work. I like being busy but it feels like everything needs to be done yesterday and my plate is quite full with more to come.

Transparency and setting boundaries. You are just one person. Maybe creating a list or spreadsheet of active assignments with deadlines to reference when having this conversation and estimated completion time? What are your supposed to do? You aren’t a super hero

I’m not sure who is in charge of work allocation but you should reach out if there is someone. Other than that, figure out the type of work you want to prioritize for your career. Make sure that work gets done well and on time. Try to push back on other requests, or let them know it will come after their requested deadline due to other pressing priorities. I would go to the partner I like working with and ask them if they could back you up when you say you’re busy to other partners in other groups because you want to be able to prioritize their matters. As a junior, while you want to be able to take everything on, people will remember the quality of your work no matter how busy you are. If associate x produces better work (even if they were half as busy) associate x will have a better reputation and likely be respected more down the road. Good luck and know that a lot of people push back on work, but the way they push back and how they phrase things goes a long way as to how that news is taken.

Sweet nose, but then a hit of savory spice on the tongue with an insanely long finish that is all cigar.

I wouldn’t drink this with a cigar, because you wouldn’t notice it, but it’s insane how much that finish lingers and mimics the mouth tingle after smoking a cigar.

I see biglaw raising the salaries. I’m in midsize regional firm payed $163K class of 2014. We’re currently trying to convince the management to increase pay. It would be helpful to know how much are my peers getting at midsize, we know biglaw. Billing requirement is 1900. Good work life balance and kind people but still $$$ hella low.

I’m at a mid size transactional firm. I’m a total night owl and my partners have OK’d me starting the workday at around 11am because I regularly work until midnight or later. I get so much more done after dark! I still get some side eye from other associates, but 🤷🏽‍♀️

Does anyone else here have an unusual work schedule? Curious what adjustments you’ve made to make it work.

I accepted a job offer in April to start a few months from now, post clerkship. All conflicts/background check went smoothly etc. Since accepting my offer, the firm has increased their 1st year pay across the board to be higher than my offer was (which was, at the time, what 2nd yeas got). When should I reach out to the recruitment attorney leading up to my start date? Or should I? (Haven't spoken since May) Should I bring up the salary or just assume its higher?

I’ve been running into weird happenings at my new firm learn of everything “I misunderstood” about my package. I don’t actually qualify for quarterly bonuses at a pro-rated billing rate; no 401ks till year 2; and the biggest—we don’t qualify for a raise unless we are here during the entire fiscal year. We have a 2100 billable req which I’m barely hitting. We also get paid below 6 figures. I learned that the new associates came is at least $10k over us. I graduated 2020–but 1st firm job. Advice?

Worst stories about leaving your firm to go elsewhere? How did the old firm take it

I’m working at a small firm that is more like a one-stop shop. We’ve had instances where a client of ours have asked for a deliverable that is outside of our expertise and that we need specialists for. However, the relationship partner (is that what they’re called) for some reason wants everything to go through them rather than having the specialists directly engage with the client. Is there some legal/ethical reason for this? Or is this just an act to protect their turf?
