It wasn’t always this wild, but “1 year experience” for entry-level has definitely become more common. I got my first gig by leaning on referrals, volunteering for anything sales-adjacent, and being willing to start part-time. Networking and smaller companies can be way more forgiving than big-name postings.
No, having experience to get an entry level job wasn't normal until fairly recently. It's a tough job market now, and because a lot of people have been laid off and are looking for work, companies can post requirements like that. If someone needs a job, they'll take an entry level position even if it would ordinarily be beneath them. To get a first job, just be persistent and broaden your search and try to get in the door somewhere. Any experience you can get will be helpful to you.
