As a director in 2020 I was asked to deliver a similar message to a couple of my people. There was a decision from above that we had to get rid of people to prepare for an expected recession, and we were to do it by rating people 5s. We got scripts and delivered messages by video conference. I have since left for a much better place and more money. If you’re in tax, PM me and I can connect you with someone at my current firm. We’re hiring, not doing stealth layoffs.
I appreciate this a lot! Unfortunately I’m not in tax but it sounds like your situation worked out wonderfully. Thanks for sharing!
This just happened to me as I’ve been on the bench for a while too. They’re quietly laying people off to preserve their reputation of not making redundancies like the other big 4 it looks like. I’m still trying to process it. Happy to discuss
Oh man, I’m sorry this happened to you! What practice were you in? And what was your role? also how long were you at the firm? What’s wild is that I wasn’t even on the bench! I was actively working on various projects
Standard pwc bs. Welcome to the reality of the firm - time to move on to bigger and better things.
Appreciate everyone’s kind words- helps a lot more than you guys realize! Actually spoke to one of the partners I worked with tonight and he seemed like he didn’t even know about it until it happened. Is this possible? How could the decision be made without input from those people I’ve been working most directly with? Im trying to understand who even approved this decision?
Sorry to hear this! Good luck! Same thing happened to me. I am just less than a year in and they did as soon as I go the hang of things… I got no feedback during my short tenure and I led more than 20 proposals with some wins in the short time I was there….
They let you go when you were only there for less than a year? Wow!
Wow this is unbelievable and shocking. I have heard many others but not like someone with a decade with the firm becoming a 5 in spite of having good snapshots and utilization. Kind of not making much sense. It seems anyone can be next to go. Would you mind sharing your practice and location?
Also in Deals advisory and have been on the bench for a while and got laid off. Still in shock
Sorry to hear this. I experienced the exact same thing and got laid off only after being at Pwc deals for 1 year in NY. I was totally blindsided too because I had good snapshots. I think what I disliked the most was the lack of transparency and I had no word from my mentor or anyone after leaving. Pwc culture isn’t really the best. Although you didn’t have closure, I’m sure you’ll forget about them once you will find a better job with better people.
Damn I’m so sorry OP, that’s beyond shitty. Also in Boston and been at the firm a similar amount of time so this is scary. Take care of yourself while you process this! This is definitely going to be a pivot in the right direction even if it doesn’t feel like it right now
Wow this is shocking! I am so sorry! Did the firm provide a generous severance (multiple months pay, healthcare payment etc.) given your long tenure with the firm? Did they offer to help with job placement or provide any other transition support.
It depends on how much time you’ve been at the firm, because I was there so long I got 3 months but that’s the max
So sorry this happened. Are you by chance a senior manager? I’ve noticed at my firm that the senior managers tend to be the first to go when making cuts.
I’m a minority and was just let go…
Wow. I’m sorry this happened to you and yet they are still claiming no layoffs…
Do you think this was basically in an effort to cut costs? I mean I would be able to potentially stomach that. I did the math and my hours this year earned the firm a couple million…so honestly it’s just not making sense to me.
Oh wow did rub any of the big bosses the wrong way? Sorry to hear that! No transparent!
Totally. No closure at all. I’m still in complete shock.
When I read this post I was like “did I write it”? EXACTLY my story and same yrs at the firm. 😒
Are you in an IFS role?
No client facing
How long were u on the bench?
Did you do something (or not do) that could have gotten you have a 5? For example mandatory trainings not done or on an untimely basis or your independence checkpoint not updated w/c led to a breach for example? If not then dont see any reason why you would be $#!+ canned
Nothing like that at all!
How long had you been in Deals practice? Did you recently transfer from audit?
2 years not recent
