We had a customer come in for years and return the carcass of a whole Halibut. After purchasing it he would fillet it and bring the bones back for a refund of the unused weight. The company stopped it after a manager caught him while eating dinner one night. The customer was the Seafood Restaurant owner down the street from the store.

This sounds like something Kramer would do in a Seinfeld episode. It's so crazy that I'd be tempted to think it wasn't real, but I've worked long enough in customer service to know it probably is...

Let’s talk speed reading. I’m a slow reader and listened to a podcast recently on speed reading. I’m intrigued. Who here speed reads? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? I do mostly litigation and am thinking that speed reading would help with research but maybe not things like doc review where you need to review for both responsiveness and privilege.

Making a lot of money relative to the average but feeling poor? Median after-tax income was ~$55,000 in 1981 and was ~$73,000 in 2020. Using a Bank of Canada inflation calculator $55,000 in 1981 is equivalent to ~$165,000 today, which would put someone in the top 10% of earners today. But in 1981 the median family had that extra money. Who can I blame?

Once when I was waiting tables, I had a guy pay me cash. The change was 45 cents, which I didn't give back to him because like who wants that. He then asked where the change was, and when I explained that I didn't give back the loose change, he made a big stink about how dollars and cents matter and didn't leave me a tip. He was a republican staffer on capitol hill.

Back when I was getting started in the food world, I worked flipping burgers at In-n-Out. A man came in and said the burgers he had gotten weren’t right. He dumped the food on the counter and then he started throwing them back behind the counter. We gave him a refund and then his demeanor completely changed. He was calmer and he told us to have a great day as he left us to clean up the mess he made.
