You aren’t totally gone… you still are in the right headspace if you are thinking about connections with students.
Thank you.
I agree but know the heaviness that you are feeling. A very wise woman once told me that sometimes the connections aren't enough. I never understood what she meant until my 14th year of teaching. I derailed my life for another 12 years not really happy or sad. I staid close to education but swore off the classroom. I'm back now working with blind students. I hate the paperwork but I'm happy now. Dig deep. If you need a break the do it. Have faith as you will end up right where you need to be when it is time. I'm now in year 20 and have had lots of adventures along the way. You have to block it all out and do what is best for you.
What I have realized is that I’m working with the wrong age group. I’m a middle school person and I’m currently teaching at a high school. No matter what I try I just don’t vibe with high schoolers so make sure that before walking away that you try other age groups. My favorite ages to work with are 11 - 13 year olds best. You will have a better quality of life if you work with high schoolers because they are basically adults.
Stay away from the Teachers Lounge and talks about students that are not professional talks that are discussed by less professional teachers. Listen to me please, I have been teaching almost 50 years and what I found is that the students will bring you along and teach you how to be a better teacher. Teaching is not about the school or the system is about the students. They will teach you new and innovative ways to becomeTo become a better teacher. Being liked is not as important as being respected and being able to lead your students and their love will come from those qualities- respect and Leadership. The first year of teaching is the hardest ever. It's like being a new mother with no roadmap on how to get through the first year. Most of all love yourself and give yourself good Rewards when you're finished at the end of the day that you made it through and that tomorrow will be better than the day that you're in. Do something wonderful for yourself as a person and let your job be your job when you're correcting papers and in school. As a master teacher let me tell you not to let teaching when your whole life. As much as I love teaching, it is not my entire life. You can make it through if you believe in your students and yourself. Even the rough students, especially the rough students.
That is great advice!
