What are everyone's honest thoughts about living in Dallas? I'm currently living in NYC and my company is offering to transfer me to Dallas but I'm unsure. Is Dallas a good place to live, will I miss NYC?

It depends! Our favorite answer as consultants. It depends on your age, your family situation, things you enjoy and dislike…
I LOVE NYC to visit but I can’t see my self living there with kids and dealing with public transportation on a daily basis. Dallas area is big, flat, boring, safe, family friendly, spacious.

like

And for someone like me from New England who moved to Dallas. It is not boring! But ya from NYC it will seem boring
All perspective

As a fellow Dallas transplant - one underrated feature about Dallas is the airports. You aren’t particularly far from either side of the country, you have DFW that can take you direct to any continent with one flight, these aspects of Dallas make up for the things I haven’t loved.

It’s not a city like NYC at all. Come visit before you get moved at the very least, if you love NYC you will miss it, but there’s no other city like NYC

I lived in NYC and Miami, FL (I’m a native Floridian) and I am currently in Dallas.. the first thing I noticed when I moved here last summer is how freakin hot it was. Unbearable. And how early the city shuts down. I was eating at a restaurant in NorthPark Mall and was shocked that it shut down at 8 pm. I kid you not. Second, the city is not as “vibrant” as NYC. It can be kind of boring if you’re used to a city with a lot of energy. BUT the quality of living is sweet. The weather is great and there is a a strong business community here. I live in North Dallas and I don’t worry about crime anymore like I used to. I live in a beautiful home and I’m able to find every culture/ type of restaurant under the sun (I’m a foodie). Like someone else said.. visit before you live here. There are areas with hip vibes where you may find your slice of paradise.

Exactly what he said. But im a Californian.

Actively trying to escape Dallas after 2 years here… do not recommend being stuck in the middle of the country in blazing heat

Grew up in Dallas and even though it will always be home, I avoid moving back. Dallas proper is not really super diverse - class and race are so painfully obvious and you'll know exactly which spots/areas make you feel like you don't belong there. It's a red state and while Dallas is relatively blue - doesn't feel like you could really be open with your politics without feeling like you're going to get shot.

Moved here for my SOs job from nyc - I miss nyc terribly and can’t wait to leave.

1. Absolutely everything requires a car - nothing is walkable (even the “popular” areas seem very quiet compared to nyc)

2. The weather is terrible, even when it’s mild, it’s filled with mosquitos and other flying bugs

3. Flat with zero natural beauty whatsoever. No lakes, no mountains, no hiking. I’m sure people here will tell you about some trail 2 hours away, but it is nothing like what you will find on the east or west coast.

like

No lakes?

I grew up in Dallas, and after 35 years there, I moved to California, and I haven't looked back. I, of course, miss my family, but DFW is now incredibly flat and boring. This is in comparison to both Southern and Northern CA.

If you like the suburban life, then Dallas will fit the bill, but it's definitely nothing like an NYC, LA, or San Francisco.

like

I don't disagree, and in that regard, Dallas is good value for the money.

You must be crazy to move from nyc to Dallas if you’re young. It’s a downgrade. You can always move here once you have kids and want to settle down.

like

Dallas is doable. You have to find/build your community. You’ll def miss the fast-paced NYC lifestyle. Initially you’ll be pissed because some folks seem to move or drive "slower" 😬. On the plus side, you can definitely buy your mini mansion; def not brown stone nor will it have ancient sentimental stories to them. LOL

As a former transplant from NJ here 12 years ago, come & get a feel as suggested above.

It depends. I tolerated NYC. It was a terrible place to live made tolerable by great access to renowned museums of all kinds and great variety of food options.

I love Dallas. Travel anywhere is easier, food is underrated and quite good, cost of living is way lower, there are enough cool museum/zoo/etc for what I need, and access to great parks and sports at least on par with what NYC has.

Add in how much nicer people are and I much prefer it here.

For what it’s worth, SF was similarly tolerable with many pros but cons that matter to me, and. Chicago was my next favorite place to live, but hated the long winter.

Kind of proves my point - it depends.

Parks for example: I love how many little parks are near me and feel 100% safer than even Central Park. NYC never felt safe. That’s just my experience though.

We moved here 1 year ago. I am from South Florida where everything is by car so I dont know how you would feel about that if you walk everywhere now. You need a car in Dallas, its huge. Its so big that it was hard for us to decide where to move. We finally moved to Prosper Tx which is north of Dallas. Its life in the Suburbs and it beats life in Miami in many ways. I wanted to go back to South Florida so bad because my family lives there. However, when we got here I started noticing how things just clicked… everything is so convenient and closeby. Many restaurant choices and activities. Its a professional crowd with kids, wonderful sense of community that I had never experienced before. Kids are all into sports. Weather is weird, that would be the only real negative thing here. Heat is bad, but we hung out at the neighborhood pool every evening… thats how weve met people here. And let me tell you its a huge mix of people from everywhere which makes it fun. I dont deal with traffic because I work from home. But I doubt its worst than Miami traffic. We have a huge house that I would not be able to afford in South Florida either. I am not sure what stage of life you are now, I am married and have a kid, so its working out great for us. I didnt expect to be so happy here, but I am. I will say my friend who is single complains about the dating scene. Up here there are trails and lakes and thats it. But you can travel easily anywhere since you are short distance away from many places if you fly. Good luck!

It’s not Miami it’s not NYC. But it’s nice and easy place to live.

What 3 things do you like most about NYC?

For six months out of the year, you will live in oppressive triple degree heat and not leave the indoors. Everything closes early. Very family friendly and oriented, depends on your life stage.

Moved from Cali. Love the suburbs. Great place for a family.

No state income, or city, tax. OP - if your salary will stay the same in Dallas as it’s in NYC, take home pay will be much more. Plus lower (though not low) cost of living here.

I disagree on the crime. I live in Uptown and there’s a TON of theft. I’m from Jersey City and honesty felt safer there and in NYc than here. Police here won’t act.

Not compared to NY

Dallas has fantastic food, great opera and classical music concerts, community oriented people, a particular love for money and personal side projects, a vibrant and positively mysterious Mexican-American community and overall an incontestable optimistic and constructive vibe.

Fellow New Yorker, summers suck (3.5 - 4 months out the year) and not as walkable. If you can adapt to that then you’ll be fine in Dallas

I was born and raised in Dallas and still live here I am now 24 Dallas Texas Weather can be Bipolar at times but I love 💕 it here and I live in Oak Cliff
